Besides the gestures being so adorable 🥰, they’re actually crucial for language development and a stepping stone for the emergence of words.

And studies have shown that the development of gestures is very predictive of a child’s verbal skills at 24 months of age.

These forms of nonverbal communication help a little talker begin learning the function of communication-requesting, protesting 🪧or rejecting 🙅‍♀️, showing, pointing, and sharing joy ☺️ in an interaction with another.

This video shows 16 gestures by 16 months that was developed by the First Words Project.

Although these skills develop *somewhat* sequentially due to the development of motor skills and understanding of the functions of communication, these gestures can develop “out of order” and that is okay! 👌

So, let’s not pay too close attention to certain gestures developing at exact months.

Rather, the question to ask is is my baby developing gestures and adding new ones each month?

If your child isn’t demonstrating any gestures by 12 months old, it is recommended to get evaluated through your state early intervention program or private speech therapy services.
